Stagnation
Not the death of life, but the slowing or arrest of change, decay, memory, and passage of the soul.
01 · Definition
What stops?
Wind can blow, people can walk, and water can appear to flow within a Stagnation zone. Yet natural processes fail to reach their purpose: a seed neither rots nor sprouts; a wound neither bleeds nor heals; a corpse does not decay; clocks run at different speeds; prayer-words are remembered while their meaning is lost.
02 · Core Region
The Pale Basin
The 80–120 km core on the eastern shore of Nareth’s dried inland sea is the oldest and most intense known Stagnation region. Its boundary changes with season, magic, and unknown factors. Its proximity to a World Vein nexus, ancient human roads, and lost archives intensifies its effect.
Outposts, research camps, abandoned villages, and smuggler routes ring the Basin; official expedition records are not fully public.
03 · Lost History
The five old human kingdoms
After the first great event, neighbouring peoples reported losing the name, ruler, roads, and even some family origins of the Fifth Kingdom. Its land did not vanish; the shared record that gave it meaning did.
04 · Scattered Signs
Remote Stagnation pockets
Akıntısız
An abandoned River Throne town where moving water does not reach the lower basin.
Last Glow
A settlement at Nine Lanterns’ border whose lights can be seen, while its tunnels always return to the same place.
Black Harvest
A disputed Myconid region where fungi neither die nor produce spores.
Second Morning
A Reborn settlement near Akıntısız; some residents returned to life incompletely.
05 · Observed Effects
Life, magic, and death
Living beings
Time sense, close memory, emotion, and a person’s bond with their own Name can fray.
Animals
They notice the boundary first: horses stop, birds turn, and insect sound falls silent.
Magic
Results detach from purpose: healing does not renew, fire does not warm, and teleportation can return to its beginning.
Death
Before breath disperses, a soul can become caught in the Threshold Interval; funerals use the Rite of Motion.
06 · Traveller’s Guide
No protection is certain
- Carry your own name and the last three days in writing.
- Carry a non-magical clock, flowing water, and a germinating seed.
- Compare memories with companions; do not travel alone.
- Turn back when a road, conversation, or sound repeats.
- Leave if animals refuse to advance, the road repeats, and wounds do not heal.

Six stories the world tells
None is public, confirmed truth: an Ordan weapon, a king’s immortality rite, a wound in the world, an underground seal, celestial punishment, or the possibility that the catastrophe is salvation all compete as explanations.
