The Szaïr are urban Qasyrrans who carry wealth on the body as well as in the vault, making debt, house ties, and contract into visible signs.

Visible ties
Metal chains, coins, plates, and fine face veils are more than decoration. A piece may carry house memory, a trade tie, a debt, or a recognized contract. These signs do not tell everyone the same thing; reading them is a social knowledge of its own.
Trade and power
When external trade opened, Szaïr merchant houses built the broadest diaspora. That does not make every Szaïr a merchant, nor does it give trade equal political power. State office remains separated by gender and caste rules, even when a house’s wealth can reshape local politics.
The language of night
Night markets, perfume, rhythm, and cloth are not merely luxuries in Szaïr life. They mark the social time formed beneath Azh-Khar’s Blind Face; a daytime record and a night-time word do not always carry the same weight.
Place in Avarra
Szaïr houses are the most visible face of Qasyrra’s dye, spice, resin, and oil trade. Their presence in ports does not represent the empire’s interior; many foreigners mistake the Qasyrra they know through Szaïr intermediaries for the whole country.
Adventure ties
- A string of coins on a family veil shows that a contract thought closed is still in force.
- A port guild accuses a Szaïr trader of forging a debt record; the real document is in a house archive opened only at night.
