Night of Measure
In the Night of Measure, no one tells the aspirant what they should do. A real knot is placed before them, and the cost of every choice enters the room with them.
It is not a contest or puzzle. The aspirant may face a blood feud, missing grain, lost court record, approaching strike, or closing pass. A house can offer information, but cannot decide for them.
Three parts of proof
At its end, “I succeeded” is not enough. Three witnesses are sought:
- Outcome: Did the knot truly loosen, or only move later?
- Cost: Who was harmed, and was that harm made visible?
- Continuance: Does the resolution remain after the aspirant leaves?
This makes the heroic story difficult. Humiliating a rival, deceiving a king, or turning enemies against one another may work briefly. If it makes a larger knot next season, the person’s measure is light.
Failure does not expel an aspirant. Some knots are older than one person can solve. Return requires carrying the failure openly, apologising to those harmed, and asking for less power in the next knot. Lying, choosing hidden sacrifice, or deliberately multiplying disorder is different: it marks someone as unmeasured, and can end trust in their word and access to the houses.
