Fey Roads and Rootbeyond

Rootbeyond is not a region of Avarra but a separate Fey plane with its own sky, currents, and horizons. The worlds can touch through the roots of Echo-Root, an ancient tree growing in Rootbeyond. That contact is not a road: it is an exception opened only when season, living root, and recognized oath agree.

Three kinds of connection

TermWhat it describesExample
Fey beingA person or entity whose nature belongs directly to RootbeyondFairy, some Eladrin, First Fey guardians
Fey inheritanceA people shaped by Fey roads long ago and rooted in AvarraElves, Firbolg, some Goblin traditions
Fey-linkedA person or group tied to a gate, oath, court, or transformation regardless of ancestryHexblood, gate keeper, oath family

These distinctions never decide citizenship, morality, or profession. A Rootbeyond-born person may grow up in Avarra, a Wood Elf may never cross a Fey gate, and a human may join a court through oath.

Echo-Root and Root Gates

Echo-Root’s trunk stands in Rootbeyond. Great trees, groves, ice-bound roots, and living veins in stone seen in Avarra are its root anchors. The Throne Tree at Elyrakök is a powerful anchor, but not the only one. A Root Gate cannot stay open without three conditions:

  1. Right time: season, moon, or local living cycle must accept it.
  2. Living anchor: a root, grove, spring, or recognized keeper must endure.
  3. Recognized oath: both sides must name a purpose—hosting, return, care, or exchange—and take responsibility for it.

Gates remain open for hours, sometimes one night. Continuous armies, mass migration, and permanent trade cannot move through them. A lost child, court envoy, seasonal seed, or century-old debt can still be reason enough to open one.

Free courts

Rootbeyond has no single Fey crown. A free court is a network of houses gathered around the same ruling, story, and gate. Courts may use seasons, but Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter are neither bloodlines nor permanent blocs. A court may instead form around “the debt of one who hosted three times,” “returning lost names,” or “withdrawing when the river rises.”

Courts dispute not land but which story binds. The First Fey concepts—Hunger, Hunt, Mourning, Spring, Oblivion, Hospitality, Echo, and Vengeance—are not courts. They are ancient claims no court can safely violate. A demand of Hospitality can force even enemy houses into a temporary truce beneath one roof.

Veil Wars and the Root Closure

In the final centuries of the Vein Union, human scribes and military administrators attempted to turn Root Gates into measurable stations. Passage shares, gate taxes, and “security” claims on anchors broke the courts’ free-passage law. Some courts joined this order for protection or trade; most insisted no state could own a gate.

The Root Closure at the end of the Veil Wars made gates rare, oath-bound, and dependent on local care. It was not a Fey victory; it was a fragile settlement accepted at great cost by human villages, Fey houses, and gate keepers.

Player starts

  • Fey connection need not make a character chosen: they may inherit an oath, have been a court guest, keep an anchor, or have crossed at the wrong time.
  • A Rootbeyond-born character is not bound to one court. Leaving one is possible; the cost is usually an unfinished story rather than pursuit.
  • Rare gates make each Fey journey an adventure with a return time, hosting duty, and consequences in both worlds.
