Breath
The force that keeps a body alive: heat, movement, metabolism, and the urge to live. After death it enters the wider cycle; by itself, it is neither memory, will, nor person.

Most Avarran traditions explain a person’s death through three elements: Breath, Name, and Trace. This is not the fixed dogma of one sect, but a shared language through which healers, mourners, jurists, and rite-workers can understand one another.
Three elements
The distinction explains why a returned body is not automatically the same person, why a ghost is not always a soul, and why a funeral concerns more than a body.

The language of grief, inheritance, and consent lawThe emotional and magical residue of a life: habit, fear, love, an image embedded in a place, or a repeated sound. A powerful Trace may behave like a spirit; not every ghost is a true Name.

When Breath ceases, a healer first establishes bodily death and protects the body and those around it. This is not yet a judgment about the soul.
Funeral words let a Name pass without being tied to the living’s debt. Many traditions therefore record last wishes, unfinished work, and inheritance separately.
Grave, mask, memory stone, table, or burnt letter each helps a Trace be remembered without harming the community. The aim is not forgetting, but refusing to turn a residue into a person.
Legal consequence
When a person is resurrected, Avarra’s laws do not all reach the same answer. Some cities find the Name’s consent sufficient; others reopen marriage, property, and military oaths for negotiation. The doctrine matters here: “the body moves again” and “the same person has returned” are not the same statement.
Likewise, a speaking ghost cannot automatically serve as a witness. If only a Trace speaks, it may carry a true memory without carrying the whole person or free will. Threshold traditions therefore ask that words from the dead be verified against living records.
