Eladrin

Eladrin are an ancient people who have learned not to hide their emotions, but to live them as seasons. An Eladrin's face, voice, and even the air around them can change with the season that rules within their soul.

“To know an Eladrin, do not watch their face; listen to what the wind says while you stand beside them.”
From the notes of the traveller Sera Venn

Rootbeyond and court ties

Eladrin are not the only people who can enter Rootbeyond or descend from it, but they are among the most visible carriers of the free courts’ order of stories and oaths. An Eladrin’s season does not determine court membership: a spring mediator and a winter mourner may share a court. Those who pass a gate remain subject to the Echo-Root’s three terms; even in the proper season, passage is unreliable without a living threshold and words recognised on the other side.

Seasonal faces

Eladrin are not bound to one temperament. When their inner world changes profoundly, it appears in physical details and in the character of their magic. These states are not a classification, but a cycle an Eladrin may travel many times in a lifetime.

Spring

Curiosity, renewal, and forgiveness. Its flowers are remembered not in pale green, but in dawn-pink and young-gold tones.

Summer

Joy, courage, and burning loyalty. Their words are short, their laughter easy, and their devotion to what they protect is immense.

Autumn

Generosity, storytelling, and gravity. Those who remember forgotten names are often in this season.

Winter

Stillness, grief, and sharp clarity. Their coldness is not cruelty; it is the way they give form to feeling.

Society and custom

Eladrin communities are organized less around cities than around courts and houses. A court need not contain those who share a season; it is more often defined by a common oath, an old debt, or a passage under protection. Decisions are commonly made not through written statute, but by reference to a story already told.

Names and oaths

An Eladrin's birth name is used only by those close to them. Chosen travelling names describe the story a person carries: One Who Came After Ashes, One Who Crossed Three Doors, or Daughter of the Silent Lake. Breaking a sworn oath is not merely a loss of reputation; it can leave a lasting fracture in one's seasonal harmony.

Relations with the human world

Short-lived peoples often see Eladrin as either unreachable sages or unreliable changelings. Their deepest difficulty is the speed of human generations: within the span of a single friendship, they may see a town rise, be forgotten, and be founded again.

Adventure hooks

TitleBeginning
The Lost SeasonAn Eladrin court has not left winter for three years; the crown of spring may have been stolen.
The Wordless OathAn old traveller asks the heroes for help keeping a promise they cannot remember making.
The Pale GateAn old passage opens only at the autumn equinox; beyond it waits a house's lost archive.

Canonical record

An Eladrin's season is more than body colour or mood. It is an identity tied to fey currents, faith, and political community. An Eladrin can rarely change seasons; some states treat this as conversion, others as the abandonment of citizenship.

Cultural canon

Eladrin seasonal cultures

Spring is associated with forgiveness, Summer with protection, Autumn with story, and Winter with mourning. A season is not a permanent caste, but an emotional and social state that can change throughout a life.
