Ash Shadow
Outsiders call them Ash Assassins. They call themselves the Ash Shadow: the last witness left when court, army, and shrine have covered the wound together.
The Ash Shadow is not Eshrenicism’s comfortable face. It exists where the Debt of Repair has failed. If a lord starves villages, kills witnesses, buys courts, and closes every path an Ash Knight might use, a Shadow cell believes that refusing to stop them is itself an action.
The grave threshold
A cell cannot choose a person as “corruption” by itself. Its traditional threshold has three parts:
- The harm is named and testimony from those harmed is recorded.
- The person is offered, where possible, a visible path of repair and withdrawal.
- Local judgement, court, or shrine has knowingly closed itself against the case.
All three can be forged. That is the Shadow’s greatest fear. Every cell must therefore open its decision to another cell: secrecy is not freedom from account.
Rules that do not make them innocent
- Every death beyond the target is failure and a new debt.
- A Shadow may not decide a case involving personal revenge.
- Children, hostages, and houses of treatment are inviolable.
- After an act, a cell serves the harmed community anonymously for one season.
- No Shadow bears a glorifying song or heraldry; killing is not repair itself.
They use poison, infiltration, disguise, and quiet killing, but forbid poisoned water, collective punishment, and execution without witness. When that line is crossed, the order nears civil war.
For an accepted act, a cell seals a fragment of the harm-record with ash and salt. It leaves behind a short Ash Statement describing the wound for which the target was held responsible. The statement is not propaganda; it is evidence the next generation may challenge.
Ash Knights do not hunt the Shadow wholesale, but refuse to call its acts virtuous. Knights say repair must be visible, shared, and capable of return. The Shadow answers that when visible law is fully corrupt, only visible people are punished. In one Eshrenic city, a knight may try to deliver a target to court while, that night, a Shadow cell decides the judge is part of the wound.
